Presteigne and Norton Town Council is very aware of the ongoing climate change and of the need to take steps to tackle this major issue for our World.
The Council has a Working Group which meets informally and makes recommendations to Council of projects or measures which it can look at and which can help our community tackle the climate emergency.
Council comments on planning applications generally reference the need for energy and biodiversity mitigation measures including, e.g., high energy standards, renewables, sustainable drainage, protection of trees, swift boxes and dark sky-compliant external lighting.
Recent Council initiatives have been –
Achievement as First Dark Sky Community in Wales in 2024.
Purchase of land and creation of Coed Llanandras Nature Reserve in 2022.
River Water Quality: Currently the Council is looking at a test web page provided by River Truth and which monitors discharge by Welsh Water into the River Lugg near to the town. The page, once ready, will run until the end of March initially after which it’s usefulness will be reviewed to see if it should continue.
A link to the web page will be posted here in due course.
Other monitoring information can be found at Wye Viz – The Wye Salmon Association
